About me: I am a third generation Japanese American, Sansei artist living in Seattle. The Japanese of my mother's generation [NISEI], had a saying “ Mottainai “ (which is basically, such a waste, cant throw it away) saved things from going into the trash, to be used for other things again (reuse/upcycling). Many Japanese Americans have grown up watching their parents and relatives saving plastic food tubs, string, and cans awaiting their new uses during their lifetimes. Why weave? I guess it's in my DNA, as my mother, had to hand tie & weave netting together for the US.military in an American concentration camp in Arizona. |
